Chess, with a spell up your sleeve.
A real game of chess, plus a deck of cards that changes the rules. Teleport your rook behind enemy lines, let your queen jump like a knight for the rest of the game, or cancel your opponent's card just before it takes effect.
Play chess as usual. Each turn you also draw a card, and you may play one: some cards replace your move, others come on top of it.

Edict · Rare
Move a targeted allied piece to an empty square of your choice (one that would not put the enemy king in check).
The rules in brief
- Twenty cards
- A deck of at least 20 cards, built within a 100-point budget.
- Two ways to win
- Checkmate, as in chess. Or deck out: a player who has to draw with no cards left in their deck or hand loses.
The 4 card types in 30 seconds
- Edict
- A one-time effect, strong enough to cost you your chess move.
- On your turn, instead of your chess move.
- Maneuver
- A one-time effect that comes on top of your chess move, not instead of it.
- On your turn, before your chess move.
- Relic
- Stays on the board and keeps working every turn, until it is destroyed.
- On your turn, instead of your chess move. You set it on an empty square of your back rank.
- Flash
- A one-time effect you can play at almost any moment, even on your opponent's turn — often to counter their card.
- Whenever you have priority, in any Flash window, on your turn or your opponent's. One Flash per player per turn; on your own turn, it uses up your card for the turn.
